Text Box: FIFTH TERM OFFICIALS (2003 - 2005)

The fifth term of IPC Eastern Region began under the cloud of the untimely demise of the regionís then-president Pastor K.V. Kurian. Although his death during his tenure left an enormous gap in the leadership, the organization continued its mission under the guidance of Pastor Philip Philip, who served as the acting president for the remainder of his term.

On December 29, 2002, the general body met at India Christian Assembly, New York, under the chairmanship of Pastor Philip to elect new officers for the next three years. At this meeting, Pastors A.C. George, Antony V. Rocky, and Joseph Williams were elected as president, vice president, and secretary, respectively; and Bros. Kunjumon Samuel and Mathai M. Alummoottil were elected as treasurer and joint secretary, respectively. The region council later selected Rev. A. C. George, Rev. Joseph Williams and Bro. Joy Thumpamon as IPC General Council members. Bro. Thumpamon also was appointed as the publicity coordinator.

The current leadership of the region council consists of these officers, the Sunday school director, PYPA president and one council member from each member church, with the exception of churches with 75 or more families, which have two council members. The council meets on a regular basis to plan and approve programs for the region. A region presbytery comprising the senior pastors of member churches meet on an as needed basis to consider doctrinal and ministerial issues.

Currently, the region hosts three major programs each year: the quarterly meetings, ministersí seminar and the annual convention. Additionally, the Sunday school, PYPA and Sodari Samajam hold their meetings under the auspices of the region. Quarterly meetings generally are held in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia. The region also sponsors an annual one-day seminar for pastors, elders and others in leadership positions in local churches, offering opportunities to discuss current issues facing the churches. Since 2003, the region holds its annual convention during the Columbus Day weekend in October. Rev. Dr. Idicheria Ninan and Sis. Anna Kandathil were the featured speakers in 2003 and Pastors Tobey Montgomery, K.M. Joseph and James George ministered in the 2004 convention. This yearís convention features Rev. Bryan Jarrett, an anointed young but old time preacher. Conventions are held at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village, New York, with an exception in 2004, when it was conducted at the Queens College Campus in Flushing, New York.

A highlight of the current term was the fifth IPC Family Conference hosted by member churches in New Jersey and Rockland County, New York. The conference held at East Brunswick, New Jersey, from July 17-20, 2003, under the leadership of Pastors P. Philip, Rocky Anthony and Bro. Oommen Ebenezer and others, was a great success and blessing. As in previous terms, the IPC Eastern Region continues to be a major sponsor and financial patron of Hebron Bible College. Special offerings collected at annual conventions are used to support students pursuing their Post Graduate courses at HBC and occasionally to selected mission fields in northern India.

Three of the major undertakings for this term, namely, the adoption of a by-law and incorporation of the region, a newsletter and a Website are still works in progress and are expected to be completed before the end of the term.

During the term, Rev. Thomas Koshy, who pastored India Christian Assembly in Hollis, New York, and was a senior pastor in the fellowship relocated to Chicago. The region gave him an official send-off on June 30, 2003, at a meeting held at IPC, Queens Village, New York. Also during the term, former region officials Bros. Varghese Pinakulam, Joy Thumpamon and M.A. George relocated outside of New York and the region is grateful to them for their services.

In a sadder vein, the region again experienced the pain of death, when our beloved president, Pastor A. C. George, entered eternal rest on June 22, 2004. The region organized a remembrance service honoring his life on July 10, 2004, at IPC, Queens Village, at the very church he had founded. Rev. Antony Rocky assumed the office of the Eastern Region President at the council meeting held following the remembrance service, and subsequently, Rev. Rocky also was selected to the General Council to fill the vacancy caused by Pastor A.C. Georgeís death.

A notable event during the term was the Eastern Regionís first-ever ordination service conducted on November 20, 2004. Bro. Alvin David was ordained as pastor and Bro. Roy Daniel was separated for the ministry as an evangelist upon the official request and recommendation of the New York Pentecostal Church, Elmont, New York. The IPC General Secretary Pastor K. M. Joseph officiated the service.

During the term God also enlarged our boundaries, with the addition of the Westchester Christian Assembly to the region on August 28, 2004 and the New Life Full Gospel Christian Assembly of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania on September 17, 2005. Two more churches, the India Christian Assembly in Michigan, and Washington Immanuel Indian Pentecostal Church in Maryland are being considered for admission to the region. With the addition of these churches the region will have 34 churches in its fellowship. It should be stated for the glory of God that all of these additions are new congregations, not breakaway churches, and that none of our churches split during the current term. Additionally, the region was strengthened by the mergers of these following churches: New Jersey Full Gospel Church merged with Pentecostal Church of God, New Jersey, at the beginning of 2003, and International Christian Church merged with Calvary Faith Tabernacle, Glen Oaks, New York, on March 6, 2005.

It is with great joy that we can report that during this term our churches have been prospering, both spiritually and materially. New members are being added to most churches and several churches have moved from rented facilities to their own buildings, while some others are in the process of buying new church buildings. We wish all our churches blessings and prosperity and thank the Lord for His grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit.
